Virtual Data Protection Officer (vDPO) Services
Expert privacy leadership—without the cost of a full-time DPO
Expert Privacy Leadership Without the Overhead
Organizations handling personal data face growing privacy obligations under regulations such as GDPR, CPRA/CCPA, HIPAA, and global privacy laws. Many organizations need expert privacy leadership but don’t require—or can’t justify—a full-time Data Protection Officer.
RSI Security’s Virtual Data Protection Officer (vDPO) Services provide experienced, independent privacy leadership to help organizations manage data protection responsibilities, reduce regulatory risk, and operationalize privacy across the business.
Our vDPOs act as trusted advisors, guiding privacy strategy, governance, and compliance while integrating seamlessly with your internal teams.
Why vDPO Services Matter
Without dedicated privacy leadership, organizations often face:
- Inconsistent privacy practices across teams
- Increased regulatory and enforcement risk
- Poor visibility into data flows and third-party risk
- Reactive responses to privacy complaints or incidents
A vDPO provides structure, accountability, and expertise, helping organizations move from ad hoc privacy efforts to a defensible, sustainable privacy program.

Common FAQs
What is a Virtual Data Protection Officer (vDPO)?
A vDPO is an outsourced privacy expert who performs the functions of a Data Protection Officer, including privacy governance, risk assessment, and regulatory guidance, without being a full-time internal employee, providing independent oversight at a fraction of the cost of an in-house hire.
Is a Data Protection Officer legally required?
Under GDPR, certain organizations, including public authorities and those engaged in large-scale monitoring or processing of sensitive data, are required to appoint a DPO. Many other organizations appoint one voluntarily as a best practice, even when not strictly mandated.
Can a vDPO act as the organization's data controller?
No. To maintain the independence required under GDPR Article 38, a DPO, whether virtual or internal, cannot act as the data controller or hold a role that determines the purposes and means of data processing, as this would create a conflict of interest.
What's the difference between a vDPO and a one-time privacy consultant?
NA vDPO provides ongoing, accountable privacy leadership, including continuous monitoring, governance, and regulatory liaison, rather than one-time advisory input. This ongoing structure is closer to what regulators expect from a designated DPO function.
